ARTISTIC TRAVEL JOURNALING
brings
much more than it might seem
at first glance. Sure, it's
about capturing on paper the memorable sights, experiences and feelings of a
journey, but more important, it's about the pure pleasure of seeing (instead
of merely looking). Artistic journaling challenges you take the time to
perceive something, and to commit it, in line and color, to the page.
Even decades later, revisiting any
page in your journal will bring back the moment you created it with
astonishing clarity and immediacy!
In these workshops, you'll learn how to: (a)
see and believably sketch the human figure and the head; (b) sketch and
paint houses, trees, just about anything; (c) record a great meal as you're
enjoying it; (d) understand (and maybe even use) perspective; (e) become comfortable
working with watercolor; (f) capture not merely what you see before you, but
every sensation you're experiencing at the moment!
But
wait! There's more!
You'll learn the secret of transforming any boring,
interminable wait (think airport, jury duty, auto being serviced, bus
or train trip -- even a long car ride!) into absorbing, pleasurable,
creative time.
We will day-trip to interesting and unique locales
to sketch and journal the week's lessons
and happenings.
Any appropriate medium.
Instructor demonstrations.
Individual critiques. Beginner through advanced.

Six Mondays,
9:00 AM to Noon, October 11 to November 15, 2010
Six Mondays, 9:00 AM to Noon, January 24 to February 28, 2011
Ever wonder why we rarely look at our travel photos? Perhaps it’s because
taking a photo requires so little investment of one’s attention that actual
memories of the moment are scant. Not so with even a brief sketch and some
notes in your journal. While I still take loads of pictures, it’s invariably
my journals that, even three decades later, vividly evoke wonderful places
and events of our travels!
Sketching on location slows your pace, as you observe a scene for minutes,
not just seconds. Regardless of skill level, you’ll be amazed at how quickly
your drawing improves... within hours! Prepare to visit (and sketch) several
of the Valley’s most interesting locales, and to gain a new perspective on
sketching, journaling, travel, and even watercolor itself.
Because journaling is done solely for one's own pleasure, you needn’t be an
accomplished artist to enjoy a rewarding experience. Beginners are especially welcome.

Picture
Yourself...
sketching and
painting among the sights and sounds of beautiful
Santorini: Crystal blue water, vineyards,
centuries-old buildings, narrow winding streets, bold
color and vibrant sunlight.
Feel Yourself...
in the warm
ambiance of Santorini, overlooking the
ancient volcanic caldera,
claimed site of the lost city of Atlantis,
originally fortified by the Minoans, claimed by the
Romans, touched by the Venetians, almost unchanged
for centuries, one of Greece's jewels.
Experience...
the joy of learning
and gaining artistic skills and confidence with the
expert assistance and instruction of this
professional artist, amongst the camaraderie of a
small group of learners like yourself.
Enjoy...
great Mediterranean food,
delightful wines, new friends, breath-taking vistas,
the history and the hospitality of the people of
Santorini.
During
the week we will visit the towns and villages of
Fira and Oia (pronounced Eee-ah) and
the local museum featuring wall paintings from the ancient
city of Akrotiri. We will also take a day cruise to
explore the inner islands, with optional visits to hot
springs and the volcano, as well as the island of Thirasia.
And, in true Toscana Americana Workshops style, we
will explore
the local Greek culture, cuisine and wines while dining in
local cliff-side restaurants 1000 feet above the water!
This is
certain to be a wonderful week with plenty
of opportunity to create in a
relaxed and inspirational setting!

About
Santorini...
Santorini
is a group of islands in a circle about 10 KM across -
the rim of a large volcano that is still producing small
islands in the center. Steep slopes lead to the central
area and gentle slopes lead to the sea that circles the
island. It's really a group of islands even though it is
usually discussed as if it were one. Settlements are
scattered around the island as a series of small
villages.
Santorini
is one of the cycladic islands, created by the eruption of
the volcano 1500 B.C. (thought by some to have brought
about the end of the Minoan civilization and speculated by
some as the famous island of Atlantis). Due to this, the
island offers a versatile landscape with, on the one hand,
steep darkish rock formations, and on the
other
hand, beaches and small white villages. Besides that,
there are several interesting monuments and the active
volcano of course. Besides remnants from several eras,
Thira offers ruins of the old Roman baths, theatres and
markets.
The famous
white buildings are huddled close to one another on and
over the cliff of the central caldera. Hiking paths and
trails lead all over the island, but a charming time can
be had walking the paths that interconnect the settlements
and exploring the shops. Visitors can take ferry boats to
the central islands to visit the new land and soak in hot
springs.
