Art Screens by Lewis Barrett Lehrman

My fascination with art screens can be traced to a commission from a couple who were early collectors of my art. Owners of a spectacular open-plan contemporary  home atop a small mountain, they wanted an art screen to attractively separate their kitchen from the adjacent dining area. The result, shown above, is titled The Four Seasons.  Measuring about eight feet wide, and about 40" tall, it sits atop a  counter. Backed and edged with highly finished cherry wood, it is extended when dinner guests are expected, and at other times easily folded out of sight.

Their pleasure with the finished screen, as well as my own, prompted me to create a second full-sized screen, Spring Garden (at right).

With the intent of marketing my work to interior designers, I then created a miniature screen which I could more easily carry with me on sales calls. To my surprise, when I showed it to my gallery people, they encouraged me to concentrate my attentions on miniature art screens rather than the full sized ones I had in mind.

The result was this series.

Each screen begins with a detailed plan of the segments, then the actual watercolors, which are subsequently mounted on each plywood segment and protected with several coats of protective varnish. Edging material is selected for contrast and harmony, cut, finished, then carefully fitted, mortised for hinges, and applied. Each Art Screen (except where otherwise noted) stands approximately 25" tall, and is furnished in its own protective soft case. Crating, shipping and insurance in the US will be included for all screens with the exception of Spring Garden, the cost for which will be calculated upon request, based upon shipping destination.

Miniature Art Screens are best displayed on a plinth, or pedestal, so they may be seen from all sides and viewpoints. Their appearance changes dramatically, depending on lighting, viewpoint, and the way panels are angled.
